Gates of Heaven

A Living Temple Made of Leaf

For this vowel renewal ceremony we were commissioned to recreate, entirely from handwoven leaf one of Bali’s most sacred architectural silhouettes — the split gate of Lempuyang Temple

Set high above the ocean, this bold, 4m high sculptural installation was not a replica — it was a reinterpretation. A poetic feat of craftsmanship, it brought to life the sacred geometry of carved stone using only coconut leaf. Woven with complex density, and layer upon layer of intricate loops, folds, and curls, the structure held its own against the drama of the horizon and the legacy of the original.

Here, leaf did not imitate stone — it rivalled it. In doing so, it redefined what can be achieved with natural materials in the context of ceremony.

This project, installation art meeting breathtaking natural backdrop — is a perfect example of Make A Scene’s abilities. We do more than decorate spaces, we transform them into immersive experiences shaped by context, craft and imaginative thinking.
